MANILA – Petron Blaze Spikers continued its hot start in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Generika-Ayala Lifesavers at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.

Lindsay Stalzer led the way with 20 points, all from attacks, while fellow American Hillary Hurley chipped in 11 kills, two aces and a block for 14 points for Blaze Spikers (5-0) on Tuesday night.

After easy wins in the first two sets, Blaze Spikers found itself in trouble as Lifesavers surged to an 8-2 start. But Petron made a run after the technical timeout to tie the score 16-all.

Stalzer took matters into her hands as she shattered an 18-all deadlock with three sharp smashes to capture a 22-18 edge. Blaze Spikers wrapped up the victory with a conversion from Mary Remy Palma.

Symone Hayden nailed 14 points while Darlene Ramdin and Angeli Araneta had 10 markers apiece for Lifesavers, which remained winless in three games.

In the second game, Foton Tornadoes survived a tough stand from a revamped Smart Giga Hitters 21-25, 25-20, 27-29, 25-15, 15-12 to record its second victory in four matches.

Tornadoes got in trouble after the gritty Giga Hitters forced a fifth set, but it managed to find its groove as it broke away from a 10-all deadlock behind Brooke Kranda and Carmina Aganon.

“The other team had a lot of strong players. They really put up a fight,” said Kranda, who scored 17 points for Tornadoes. “It was a great match and I think it’s these types of challenges that can really go a long way into building our character as a team.”/PN
