MANILA – The Petron Tri-Activ Spikers continued its hot start in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix with a 26-24, 21-25, 25-13, 25-17 win over the Cignal HD Spikers at the San Juan Arena.
American reinforcement Stephanie Niemer led the way with 22 points, while Ilongga Aiza Maizo-Pontillas added 17 markers, for the Tri-Activ Spikers, which stayed at second place with a 6-1 win-loss slate.
Both teams went on a tight exchange early in the opening set with the score tied at 10-all. The Tri-Activ Spikers then got back-to-back hits from Niemer to surge to a 16-13 advantage.
The Tri-Activ Spikers managed to widened the lead to 20-16 behind Maizo Pontillas and Serena Warner. The HD Spikers responded with a run to tie the score at 24-all but two straight backrow hits by Niemer ended the set.
After dropping the second set, the Tri-Activ Spikers surged to an 8-3 start in the third frame on back-to-back hits by Maizo-Pontillas. Errors by the HD Spikers allowed the Tri-Activ Spikers to stretch the lead to 17-7.
Piling mistakes by the HD Spikers widened the gap further to 21-8. After back-to back hits by Ilongga Michelle Laborte for the HD Spikers, Carmina Aganon and Maica Morada converted one each to take the set.
The HD Spikers opened the fourth frame with an 8-5 lead but the Tri-Activ Spikers quickly wiped it out to tie the count at 10-all. Three straight hits from Niemer surged the Tri-Activ Spikers to a 16-10 lead.
The Tri-Activ Spikers continued its run behind Niemer, Warner and Aganon to build a 21-12 advantage. After back-to-back hits by HD Spikers’ Venus Bernal, the Tri-Activ Spikers ended the match with two straight hits by Niemer.
American import Laura Schaut top-scored with 14 markers, while Puerto Rican Lynda Morales added 12 points for the HD Spikers, which suffered its second straight defeat to slide down to 1-4./PN
