PH blanks Singapore in AFF Women’s Championship

MANILA – The Philippine women’s football team scored a dominant 7-0 triumph over Singapore to stay perfect in the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

The Alen Stajcic-mentored national squad were scorching since the tip-off. They cruised to their second straight victory in as many games to remain on top of Group A with six points.

Isabella Flanigan opened the scoring for Team Philippines with a fine conversion at the ninth minute. It was quickly doubled a minute later after a Singaporean player committed an own goal.

Team Philippines continued to penetrate through the defense of Singapore with Tahnai Annis knocking down a header at the 19th minute before Sarina Bolden closed the first half with a 38th minute connection.

The Pinay booters went on with its assault in the second half with Sara Eggesvik connecting from close range at the 47th minute followed by a header by Kaya Hawkinson to widen the lead further to 6-0.

Anicka Castaneda then scored upon his entry in the 69th minute as the finishing touches for the national women’s football team’s dominant triumph following a 1-0 escape over Australia last Monday.

Both teams will return to action tonight with the Philippines facing Malaysia at 7 p.m. in Rizal Memorial while Singapore takes on Thailand at 7 p.m. in the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Under-19 Men’s Football Team suffered another defeat in the 2022 AFF U19 Championship at the hands of Myanmar, 3-1, at the Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Myanmar opened a quick 2-0 advantage over Philippines in the first half with back-to-back conversions from Swan Htet and Thein Zaw Thiha in the 4th and 7th minute, respectively.

Ilonggo Jaime Rosquillo then pulled one back at the 30th minute for Team Philippines but Myanmar restored a two-goal separation when Zaw Win Thein scored past Jose Alfonso de Leon Gonzalez at the 42nd minute./PN
