MANILA – The Philippine men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball team were dominant at the start of the 30th Southeast Asian Games 3×3 basketball at the San Juan Arena.
Jason Perkins and Chris Newsome came up with clutch baskets while Jaymar Perez and Moala Tautuaa had their hits early on as the Philippines prevailed over Indonesia, 21-17, yesterday.
In the second game, Tautuaa and Perkins feasted inside while Perez and Newsome connected with their perimeter hits as the Philippines 3×3 team easily defeated Myanmar, 21-10.
In the women’s event, the Philippine women’s 3×3 team opened their campaign with a 21-4 rout of Myanmar. Claire Castro was a force inside while Jack Animam, Janine Pontejos and Afril Bernardino also had their contributions.
In the second game, Pontejos and Bernardino converted crucial points in the endgame as Castro and Animam were unable to do damage inside. The Philippines escaped Malaysia, 15-13.
In the third match, the women’s 3×3 team surged to a strong start behind Bernardino and Pontejos before holding off a late rally by Indonesia, 16-13, to finish the day with perfect 3-0 record.
In the women’s beach volleyball in Subic, Negrense Bernadeth Pons and Cherry Rondina bounced back from opening day defeat with a 21-8, 17-21, 15-7 victory over Vietnam./PN
