MANILA – Team Philippines continued its medal haul after winning a total of 13 medals, including two golds, in the ongoing 2016 Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam.
Filipino-Brazilian Margarita Ochoa delivered the first gold for the country as she ruled the -45kg newasa women’s event by beating Thailand’s Suwanan Boonsorn.
Annie Ramirez, meanwhile, clinched the second gold as she scored a 10-0 victory over Thai Siramol Deepudsa in the -55kg newasa women’s event.
Gian Taylor Dee was not as fortunate as Ochoa and Ramirez. He settled for a silver medal after losing to Iranian Amir Yahya in the finale of the newasa men’s -62kg event.
Apryl Jessica Eppinger and Jenina Kaila Napolis, on the other hand, settled for bronze medals after surviving the repechage in the newasa women’s -62kg and -55kg, respectively.
The delegation also won three bronze medals each in Muay Thai and Kurash courtesy of Philip Delarmino, Jonathan Polosan and Jay Harold Gregorio, and Helen Dawa, Lloyd Dennis Catipon and Jenielou Mosqueda, respectively.
The beach sepak takraw team, composed of Josefina Maat, Gelyn Evora and Deseree Autor, settled for a bronze medal finish. They failed to reach the finals after a 21-11, 21-11 loss to Vietnam in the semifinals.
The Philippine squad also had four guaranteed bronze medals in pencak silat.
Dines Dumaan (men’s, 45-50kg), Jaciren Abad (men’s, 50-55kg), Jefferson Loon (men’s, 60-65kg), and Princesslyn Enopia (women’s, 45-50kg) got outright semifinals berths.
The 72-man Philippine delegation was currently at ninth place in the medal rankings, with a 2-1-10 gold-silver-bronze medal haul. It aims to surpass its 3-2-7 output during the 2014 edition in Phuket, Thailand./PN
