BACOLOD City – The country now has enough sugar supply, said Negros Occidental 5th District’s Cong. Emilio “Dino” Yulo III.
The province’s sugar production may hit its peak early, as the milling season started as early as August, he added.
“We’ve reached 2.7 million metric gross tons milled as of October 15. Last year, we reached that figure in the month of November. We now have enough supply because the milling is fast,” Yulo said.
His pronouncements came as sugar planters in Negros Occidental observed that from P3,900 per kilogram bag (Lkg) of raw sugar in September, the price dropped to P3,100/Lkg for domestic or “B” sugar.
Yulo also said imported sugar has arrived, and that is the reason why the market price of sugar tempered from the previous P90 to P100 per kilo.
He said the present situation may not be good for Negros, but looking at the overall spectrum of the situation, producers are earning and sugar has become affordable for consumers./PN
