MANILA – Team Philippines has once again snagged a gold medal in a sport it was least expected to perform well.
The national team dominated the men’s ice hockey event of the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It claimed the inaugural gold following a 5-4 victory over top-seed Thailand in a tightly-contested championship game late Thursday night at the Empire City Mall.
The Philippines started strong. Francios Gautler converted a missed shot by Benjamin Imperial. Paul Gabriel Sanchez then scored back-to-back hits to widen the lead to 3-0.
After tallying its fourth point of the game, Thailand suddenly went on a huge run to come to within 4-3, but Philippines quickly answered back to restore a two-point advantage in the final period.
The victory also completed Philippines’ perfect slate in the men’s ice hockey event with victories over Indonesia (12-0), Singapore (7-2) and host Malaysia (7-7 tie and 2-1 shootout).
Meanwhile, Trenten Anthony Beram became the country’s first double-gold medalist in the biennial sporting event after dominating the men’s 400-meter run at the Bukit Jalil Stadium.
In boxing, John Marvin needed just 21 seconds to dispose Malaysian Adli Hafildz B. Mohd Pauzi and claim the gold medal in the light heavyweight class.
Eumir Marcial also won gold with a decision win over Thai Pathomsak Kuttiya in the middleweight division.
Capturing silver medals were Jemyca Aribado and Yvonne Dalida in women’s jumbo doubles squash, Lawn bowls women’s fours’ Alvin Pangan, Sharon Hauters, Nancy Toyco and Nenita Tabiano.
Winning bronze medals were David Pelino and Robert Garcia in men’s jumbo squash, Mae Soriano, Junna Tsuki and Kimberly Madrona in women’s team kumite, Katharina Lehnert and Denise Dy in women’s tennis doubles, Liza del Rosario, Lara Posadas, Krizziah Tabora, Marie Alexis Sy, Lourdes Arles, Dyan Coronacion in women’s team bowling, and Janry Ubas in men’s long jump./PN
