BORACAY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will start the Phase II of the road construction project in this world-famous island anytime soon.

The project’s Phase II worth P300 million was up for bidding last month.

It includes rehabilitation works of the roads from Crossing Rotunda to Tambisaan port in Barangay Manoc-Manoc and from Yes FM radio station to CityMall Boracay in Barangay Balabag.

“Phase I is about to be finished at the 4.1-kilometer stretch. We will further fix sidewalks and manhole covers,” said Aklan District Engineer Noel Fuentebella.

The Phase I road improvement from Cagban jetty port in Manoc-Manoc to Elizalde Compound in Balabag was prioritized by the DPWH as part of Boracay’s six-month rehab plan last year.

Phase I costs P490 million. It includes the expansion of the existing six-to-eight meter road with the installation of gutters, bike lane, drainage, and sidewalks.

The DPWH also installed six-meter long, 1,273-high density polyethylene plastic pipes to replace the reinforced concrete pipes.

Prior to the road rehabilitation, the DPWH has conducted clearing operations of illegal structures within the 12-meter main road.

The DPWH targets to complete the 20-kilometer Boracay road rehabilitation project within two-year state of calamity period in the island which will last until April 2020. (With Akean Forum/PN)
