BACOLOD City – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Negros Occidental reminded the public to eat and drink in moderation in celebrating Christmas and New Year.
Dr. Girlie Pinongan, PHO head, said as groups host Christmas parties, the attendees tend to forget they are over indulging in food and alcoholic beverages, which could result in holiday-related illnesses.
Pinongan reminded Negrenses to avoid eating too much lechon, pointing out they see a spike in cardiovascular illnesses such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart attacks.
Diabetes also becomes an issue during the holiday season.
The PHO head further advised Negrenses to eat fruits and vegetables.
Earlier, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 6 was advocating for cost-effective and healthier alternatives to the traditional preparation of meaty dishes featuring pork, beef or chicken this holiday season.
Maria Teresa Solis, head of DA-6’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division, suggested that seafood and vegetables, which are plentiful in the region, could be excellent options.
She advises consumers to consider other agricultural and fishery products.
“Christmas isn’t only about the food. Simpler, healthier choices contribute to better living. The decision to choose pork or beef is personal, but we advocate for a simple, healthy lifestyle,” Solis said.
Meanwhile, the PHO said it is important to observe proper hygiene when preparing food so as to avoid cases of gastrointestinal illnesses.
Pinongan added catering services must have the necessary permits to operate and the municipal and city health offices must strictly implement their sanitary regulations. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
