BACOLOD City – A freelance photographer died after being thrown off his motorcycle and gored by a water buffalo in Purok 10, Barangay Poblacion, Cauayan Town, Negros Occidental.

The incident on Saturday morning, Feb. 17, claimed the life of Jose Lloyd Niño Carillo, 28, a resident of Purok 3, Barangay Tiling, Cauayan.

His backrider, Lyka Silva, 27, also a resident of the same barangay, survived with injuries.

According to the Cauayan Municipal Police Station, the water buffalo pulling a cart across the road went unnoticed by the two, reportedly due to the dark surroundings. Carillo, in an attempt to avoid a collision, startled the animal, consequently prompting it to attack the photographer.

It is alleged that Carillo was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, due to fear, the owner of the water buffalo initially fled but later surrendered to the police.

The water buffalo owner decided to sell the animal to provide assistance to the victims./PN
