MANILA – The single-day coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines reached new record-high on Monday as the number of infections goes beyond the 10,000 mark.

The Department of Health logged 10,016 new cases, pushing the country’s total number of cases to 731,894. From the total, 115,495 are active cases where 95.9 percent are mild, 2.4 percent are asymptomatic, 0.7 percent are severe, and 0.4 percent are in critical condition.

The Health department also recorded 78 new recoveries for a total of to 603,213.

The number of deaths, meanwhile, rose to 13,186 with 16 new fatalities.

On the other hand, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque blamed the emergence of new COVID variants for the placing of “National Capital Region Plus” under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for a week.

Kung hindi po pumasok ang new variants na ito, talagang 1,000 lang ang cases natin araw-araw,” Roque said on Monday. “Hindi natin maitatanggi na mas nakakahawa po ang mga ito.”

As to whether the ECQ status in the NCR Plus will be extended beyond Easter Sunday, Roque said it is still being analyzed by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases./PN
