MANILA – Filipino boxer Mark Magsayo hopes to maintain his unblemished slate as he faces Mexican Rigoberto Hermosillo on Saturday night (Sunday in the Philippines) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.

This will be Magsayo’s first bout since his unanimous decision win over Indonesian Panya Uthok for the WBC Asia Boxing Council featherweight championship in August 2019.

The Tagbilaran City, Bohol-native said that he is ready for the challenge despite only being notified of his bout with Hermosillo, who’s riding consecutive losses to Manny Robles III and Viktor Slavinskyi, weeks ago.

“He’s a tough fight for me because he’s a fighter who always moves forward,” said the 25-year-old Magsayo, who is ranked at top five in both the WBC and IBF featherweight categories.

“I am looking forward for this bout because it’s an opportunity for me to fight here in the U.S. again. I am very happy that I’m fighting at main event this time. I hope that next year I will be fighting for a world title,” he added.

Magsayo, who recently signed up with the Now Boxing Promotions following his departure from Cebu City-based ALA Boxing, was supposed to make his comeback last month but his then opponent Jose Haro opted to retire from boxing.

Magsayo will enter the match with an unblemished 20-0-0 win-loss-draw ring record, including 14 stoppage wins, while the 28-year-old Hermosillo has 11-2-1 slate, with eight knockout wins./PN
