ILOILO City – To enhance public spaces here and promote wellness, the city government inaugurated on Monday, April 7, a newly constructed outdoor gym, a restored heritage fountain, and a fully renovated public restroom at Plaza Libertad — one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Mayor Jerry Treñas and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 6 director Juan Jovian Ingeniero led the ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city officials and barangay leaders.
The P20-million upgrades were funded under the DILG’s Local Government Support Fund (LGSF).
The outdoor gym features two exercise zones equipped with fitness machines tailored for senior citizens, aimed at encouraging physical activity among the elderly.
“These outdoor gyms will give our seniors a place to exercise and stay healthy,” Treñas said. “We want them to have a space where they can take care of their bodies while enjoying the outdoors.”
Plaza Libertad’s central fountain, a historical centerpiece, was also restored to its original design through the expertise of Escuela Taller, a group specializing in heritage conservation. The revitalized fountain stands not just as an aesthetic feature, but also as a reaffirmation of the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
Also unveiled was a fully rehabilitated public restroom, which had long required improvements. The facility now offers clean, accessible, and user-friendly amenities for plaza visitors.
Mayor Treñas said additional enhancements are forthcoming, including the installation of benches and more trees to provide shade and improve the plaza’s overall ambiance. “We want Plaza Libertad to be a true public space — safe, beautiful, and useful to everyone, especially now that the weather is getting hotter,” he added.
He also announced plans to replicate similar developments in other districts such as Jaro, La Paz, and Molo, aiming to create more green, inclusive, and people-centered spaces throughout Iloilo City./PN
