MANILA – Grace Poe wanted the Senate to look into the death of Ilongga domestic worker Joanna Daniela Demafelis in Kuwait.
The committees on Labor and Foreign Affairs must also investigate other overseas Filipino workers’ deaths and the reported abuse of Filipino workers abroad, said the senator.
The Senate must conduct a “thorough, objective and no-nonsense” review of present laws and policies on employment contracts, rationalization of additional human and financial resources in embassies, training/livelihood assistance, among others, she said in Senate Resolution No. 636.
“It is high time that we value the faces and stories behind the statistics and numbers related to our OFWs,” she said.
Demafelis, a native of Sara, Iloilo, was beaten to death and her body was stuffed in a freezer in an abandoned apartment.
Her death and the widespread reports on abuses among OFWs triggered the Philippine ban on the deployment of workers to Kuwait./PN
