MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has appointed Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil as the new head of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Marbil will serve his position until he reached his mandatory retirement age of 56 on February 7, 2025, or barely three months before the 2025 midterm elections.

“I hereby assume the position as Chief Philippine National Police effective April 1, 2024,” said Marbil, who was also promoted to the rank of Police General on Monday.

Marbil, the 30th PNP chief, said his leadership will focus on enhancing the knowledge and professionalism of PNP personnel, expanding their ability to maintain order and fight crimes, and increasing people’s trust in the police force.

The appointment of Marbil was first leaked through the social media last December, but it was then denied by the PNP leadership.

Marbil, a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Sambisig” Class of 1991, was a former head of the PNP Directorate for Comptrollership (DC).

The 55-year-old police officer was also a former director of Police Regional Office 8 in Eastern Visayas.

Marbil replaced Police Lieutenant General Emmanuel Peralta, who was appointed as the PNP’’s officer-in-charge on Sunday following the end of term of General Benjamin Acorda.

Acorda’s term was supposed to have ended on December 3, 2023 when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 56, but President Marcos extended Acorda’s service until March 2024./PN
