SAN JOSE, Antique – As part of security measures for the holidays, police have put up assistance desks in malls here.

Officers were also detailed within and around the establishments to secure last-minute shoppers, said Superintendent Norby Escobar, municipal police chief.

All police assistance desks will be up until after the New Year.

Aside from malls, police officers were also deployed to terminals, said Escobar.

“We are preventing lawless elements from taking advantage of the people,” he stressed.

He said they are anticipating the influx of Antiqueños coming home for the holidays and tourists taking their vacation in the town.

Meanwhile Escobar said the police are also monitoring the firecracker zone in Barangay Dalipe with the help of firefighters and health officials.

Department of Trade and Industry personnel joined the team of inspectors on Thursday.

They will check if seasonal and in-demand products like Christmas lights have Philippine Standard and/or Import Commodity Clearance marks, said agency official Glen Fernando. (PNA)

Akelco on ‘red alert’ during holidays

KALIBO, Aklan – To ensure continuous electricity supply, the Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) will be on “red alert” during the holidays.

Akelco gives particular attention to Boracay, where it deployed 25 personnel to ensure power reliability 24/7, said Engr. Joel Martinez, assistant general manager for engineering.

The cooperatives personnel were advised to immediately respond to cases of major power failure.

Akelco was criticized for the series of power interruptions in the past several months.

Several resorts in Boracay complained of losing millions of pesos worth of appliances due to damage caused by power failures.

“We are doing our best to ensure power reliability,” said Martinez. “The strong wind in the island is one of the causes of power disruption.”

He also urged the consumers to immediately report cases of power failures, especially during the holidays, when the demand for electricity is high. (PNA)
