ILOILO City – Police killed a suspected member of the Prevendido drug group during an operation in Zone 2, Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao district.
The 30-year-old Romy Hisog of the same village resisted arrest, the district police claimed.
Hisog’s death raised to 12 the number of illegal drug suspects killed in police operations in Western Visayas since Oplan Double Barrel, the Philippine National Police’s intensified antidrug campaign, was launched on July 1.
Hisog was No. 20 in the Mandurriao police station’s watch list of drug personalities.
Operatives of the Mandurriao police station and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Region 6staged a sting operation against him on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Hisog sold a sachet of shabu to an operative in his bedroom around 6:45 p.m.
When he was about to be handcuffed, he grabbed his .38 revolver and fired at Police Officer 2 Kimberly Race but missed, according to Senior Inspector Adolfo Pagharion, Mandurriao police chief.
“Our men shot the suspect when they saw him holding a grenade,” said Pagharion.
Hisog died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Four people having a “pot session” in the house were caught: Jerry Lagutin Jr., 24; Glenda Oribe,47; Carmelita Bactung, 42; and Vennus Mina, 20.
They were all residents of Barangay Bakhaw. They were hauled to the Mandurriao police station lockup cell.
Eight sachets of shabu, the suspect’s .38 revolver, the PRB 423 fragmentation hand grenade, and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the house.
Hisog’s death followed the killing of businessman Melvin “Boyet” Odicta Sr., whom the authorities identified as the drug lord “Dragon,” and wife Meriam on Aug. 29 at the Caticlan Jetty Port in Malay, Aklan.
The Odictas were residents of Barangay Tanza Esperanza, City Proper.
Three days prior (Aug. 26), Welner Gomez — also of Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao, and another suspected member of the Prevendido drug group — was shot dead in abuy-bust operation in Barangay Jibao-an, Pavia, Iloilo.
He shot the police officers out to arrest him, prompting the latter to fire back, according to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
On Aug. 25, Elpidio Geroy of Barangay Jereos, La Paz district — an alleged member of the Odicta drug group — was also killed in a buy-bust operation.
La Paz police officers claimed the suspect fought them, prompting them to shoot him to death.
