ILOILO City – The death of Police Staff Sergeant Erwin Daniel at a hotel on General Luna Street, City Proper on Dec. 30, 2021 was a case of accidental firing, according to police investigators of Police Station 1.

It was initially speculated that Daniel killed himself.

Police Station 1 chief Major Shella Mae Sangrines said Daniel’s wife denied they had a fight.

“Hambal sang iya asawa, wala sila nag-away. Nagapang himos ang iya bana sang iya bag kun sa diin didto nabutang ang pusil – a .45  pistol. Then gulpi lang naglupok,” said Sangrines.

Daniel succumbed to a gunshot wound on the chest.

The wife said she was on the phone ordering food when she heard a burst of gunfire.

When she turned around, she saw her husband already unconscious.

The family agreed to an autopy.

Sangrines said Daniel’s wife also denied reports that the policeman was complaining about his work.

“As police officers we are used sang work nga kis-a multitasking kita,” she said.

Daniel, 38, of Barangay Ticud, La Paz district here, was a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) of the Iloilo City Police Office.

“Medyo matawhay man sila. Nagabulig sila police visibility sa mga strategic areas, especially sa Smallville sa Mandurriao kag naga-respond man kun may ginamo,” Sangrines added.

Before the incident, Daniel asked permission from his superior to “under time” because his family was waiting for him in the hotel.

Around 5:30 a.m., the Daniel family checked in at room 407.
