Politicians, pilferers and other oddities…

OVER the weekend we accumulated again some random thoughts, mostly on politicians. As usual they are not meant to convince but rather to make you think. If you disagree, are offended or triggered, it does not really matter as I don’t care. You can say they’re just a clever way to condescend.

And for “hors d’oeuvre” we start with this: Spain brought Christianity, paella, callos and bacalao to the Philippines while the Philippines brought Jollibee to Spain.

Every time Manny Pacquiao speaks and trying to be clever, he almost always ends up punching himself in the face. He is lost in translation, quite obviously out of his depth. It is also very obvious that someone got to his head and manipulated his bloated ego.

So Leni Robredo is going to run for president to stop Bongbong Marcos from running as president. And now she’s also going to run so that ‘80s “boy band”, a second-rate Beatles copycats “Eraserheads”, will have a reunion.

Leni Robredo should just run as president out of her own free will and because she wants to, not so that some ersatz “Beatles”, irrelevant, largely forgotten boy band can have a reunion.

The latest development to this Leni Robredo political striptease is that 1Sambayan has, “after thorough deliberation” (really …) chose Leni Robredo to be their candidate for President. Should we be surprised?  I think not.  After all those presidential wannabes ignored the calls and invitations of both 1Sambayan and Leni Robredo for a united opposition, it does appear that none of these wannabes want to be associated with them.

1Sambayan, Leni Robredo and Antonio Trillanes IV – just your usual losers stuck with each other because no one wants them.

The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee is holding Pharmally executive Lincoln Ong in detention because he refuses to say answers that will fit Sen. Richard Gordon’s narrative.

If you’ve seen the televised hearing, this Senator Gordon is acting like a judge, jury and executioner, bullying and shouting at resource persons who refuse to say what he wants them to say.

Senator “Dick” Gordon, the professional politician and Red Cross chairman for life, should be castrated, according to President Duterte.

On Twitter; Sen. Tito Sotto said in all his experience with the Senate Blue Ribbon committee hearings, the accused always plays the victim.

I suppose the senator is not aware that the Senate Blue Ribbon committee is not a court. There are no accused, only resource persons and the purpose of that committee is investigation in aid of legislation not to declare someone guilty.

Senator Sotto, your slip is showing. In trying to be clever, you inadvertently showed that you have no idea what “in aid of legislation” is. But I guess in all those years of being a senator you are not aware of that.

Last week, Sept. 28 to be exact, a warrant of arrest was served by the La Paz Police to Iloilo City councilor Jojo Javellana and his wife, Punong Barangay Tracy Javellana of Barangay Loboc. They were charged with violation of Republic Act 7832 (the Anti-Pilferage of Electricity Act and Theft of Electric Transmission Lines/Materials Act of 1994) in February by MORE Power.

This prompted the Javellana couple to post bail at P72,000 each for their temporary liberty.

The odd thing there is that the Javellana couple already settled their civil dispute with MORE Power on March 16. They paid P179,000.

According to MORE Power’s lawyer Atty. Allana Mae Babayen-on, the couple “had already settled the civil aspect of the complaint, the one we filed with the City Prosecutors Office, on March 16, 2021. And as agreed, because once the civil liability is settled, the distribution utility will withdraw the case, which they did.”

The thing is, even if the civil liabilities are settled, it does not stop the City Prosecutor from enforcing its own mandate, which is to determine probable cause or the guilt of the accused based on the evidence submitted.

As far as the distribution utility is concerned, the liabilities of the case are already settled. But it does not stop the court from determining if indeed RA 7832 was violated.

And this serves as a warning. No matter what your station in life is, flirting with illegal electrical jumpers will burn you literally and figuratively. (brotherlouie16@gmail.com)/PN
