Politics in General Santos City

WOW! You can never underestimate the power of politics to knock you off your feet!

Last week, something happened in General Santos City. A senator who just got sworn in as president of PDP-Laban, the political party of President Rodrigo Duterte, supposedly announced during his birthday bash the candidates he has picked for top posts in the city and the 1st congressional district of South Cotabato and General Santos City.

Immediately after the birthday shindig, many posts on social media expressed varied sentiments about the matter. Some sounded sad; others disappointed; while some others made fearless forecasts, haha!

So, you see, politics is truly a favorite pastime in this country, pandemic or not.

But wait, what does this augur for local chief executive Ronnel Rivera and congresswoman Shirlyn BaƱas? Does this mean that politically, they are back as a team?
Remember that years back, even before Rivera allied with the senator who wishes to become president, Rivera and BaƱas were already allies. I would say their ties run deep. And I would venture to say that this political partnership is a threat to the now political fiefdom of the senator. Hence, they seem to be cast out from the alliance. Or am I the only one sensing this?

Well, if both Rivera and BaƱas are no longer favored by the senator, what then? Is that a big deal? Is that a relief? Should we celebrate?

If I were to give my point of view, itā€™s for the best! Congratulations for being emancipated from the group! What took you so long?

Now you can revert to your ties and come up with your own political plan; play hard ball; and recruit new faces. Yes, I strongly suggest the millennials who are tired and seething against traditional politicians and convenient political marriages.

The millennials are the new trend of politics. Our electorate resonate with Vico Sotto ā€“ I prefer a millennial woman leader though since I am pro-woman ā€“ and the likes because they have the breeding ā€“ yes breeding, intelligence, good looks, and audacity to confront walls of resistance and wayward political traditions.

Letā€™s have millennial leaders in your team, if I may say so, to expand your reach and truly touch base with the populace. But most importantly, to do away with the old and familiar faces who have dotted our political landscape for the longest time! Wala na bang iba?

So, I am glad that this breakup is happening ā€“ for now. Itā€™s politics after all. Who knows what can change next year, huh!

The breakup is inevitable especially considering the political ambitions, pride, and more ambition ā€“ I donā€™t want to use greed ā€“ of some who seem never contented to be blessed with positions they could never have imagined in their lifetimes.

I am looking for track record to back you up in your wish to become president. Yes, thatā€™s right. Show us what you have done in the lower house. Show us what you are doing in the upper house. No, not the donation and outreach programs because anyone can do that even if one isnā€™t an elected personality. Letā€™s not mistake donation and charity work for governance and legislation. The former can be done by anyone; the latter should be done by a supposed elected official.

So back to Rivera and BaƱas, I am saying this breakup is good for General Santos City and the 1st congressional district. This opens doors for more quality candidates. Yes, we have had enough of rehash candidates. We have had enough of candidates whose integrity are questionable. We have had enough of candidates who kiss the ass of their supposed leaders.

Itā€™s time to tango to another tune. Letā€™s start dancing!
