MANILA â Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws turned to Bernadeth Pons as it scored 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18 against Adamson Lady Falcons in the do-or-die Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference semifinals.
Pons, a native of Negros Occidental, finished with triple-double 15 points, 17 excellent digs and 14 excellent receptions for Lady Tamaraws, which reached the V-League finals for the first time since 2014.
âIba talaga kapag nandiyan si Pons. Siya ang nagpanalo sa amin,â Lady Tamaraws head coach George Pascua said of Mondayâs match at San Juan Arena. âAng labanan dito kung sino iyong may desire to win.â
Czarina Carandang contributed 16 markers while Toni Rose Basas added 10 markers for Lady Tamaraws, which set up a best-of-three finals encounter with two-time defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs starting tonight.
âAko naman po, kapag nasa loob ako, ginagawa ko lang iyong best ko maging leader kasi iyon ang napansin ko na kulang sa mga huli naming laro,â said the hitter Pons, who missed a few games for FEU when she played in the UAAP beach volleyball.
After losing the opening set, Lady Tamaraws started strong in the second frame with a 15-5 lead. Lady Falcons came to within 11-16 but Lady Tamaraws, behind clutch points from Pons, managed to keep Lady Falcons at bay.
The game got tight in the third with Lady Tamaraws holding to a 16-12 lead. Lady Falcons countered with a run to take an 18-17 edge before Lady Tamaraws went on to take 24-21 on hits by Pons and Carandang.
Lady Tamaraws jumped to a 13-8 start in the fourth but Lady Falcons quickly countered to come to within 14-16. But that was the last hurrah of Adamson. Pons and Basas put on the finishing touches to clinch the finals seat.
Negrense Christine Joy Soyud finished with 16 points while Chiara Permentilla contributed 10 markers for Lady Falcons, which was decimated with the absence of injured Jessica Galanza./PN
