Manila – The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws cruised past the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.

Negrense Bernadeth Pons led the way with 24 points, to go along with 23 digs and 14 receptions, for the Lady Tamaraws, which tied the Lady Maroons at second place with a 4-2 win-loss slate.

Mary Remy Palma and Toni Rose Basas chipped in 11 points apiece, while Heather Guino-o and Jeanette Villareal combined 12 markers for the Lady Tamaraws, which is on a three-game winning streak.

The Lady Tamaraws opened the first set with a 15-9 lead behind Pons and Villareal. The Lady Maroons came to within four points but the Lady Tamaraws went on a 6-2 finishing run behind Pons and Basas to take the set.

After losing the second frame, the Lady Tamaraws trailed early in the third frame before surging ahead at 22-21 on a Villareal running hit. An error by the Lady Maroons and a Palma hit closed the set.

The Lady Tamaraws started strong in the fourth set to build a 16-9 lead on hits by Villareal and Palma. The Lady Maroons rallied to within four but consecutive points from Pons clinched the win for the Tamaraws.

Para sa amin sobrang saya especially sa mga coaches kasi nakikita namin na ‘yung pag-push namin sa mga players lumalabas sa game,” said Lady Tamaraws head coach Ceseal delos Santos.

Diana Carlos top-scored with 17 points, while Maria Lina Molde added 11 markers for the Lady Maroons, which suffered a huge blow after losing veteran Nicole Tiamzon to an injury late in the second set./PN
