MANILA – A representative from Oriental Mindoro proposed the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
The Interior department and the Commission on Elections have announced that the polls will push through on May 14.
But Reynaldo Umali wanted them deferred anew to give Congress time to determine the proper government structure if it transitions into a federal system.
“No-el (no election) kasi masyado nang masikip ang Mayo. Kailangan naming mabuo iyong Konstitusyon para magkaroon ng plebisito,” Umali said. “Papaano namin magagawa iyon in one month?”
Congress – not the executive branch – has the last say on whether or not to push through with the elections, the representative insisted.
If ever, this will be the third time that the barangay and SK elections get postponed. The October 2016 polls were first deferred to October 2017, and then to May this year.
“Nag-file na po ako ng bill para ipagpaliban iyong [elections],” said Umali. “Kapag iyon ay sinusugan ng aming mga kasama – at alam mo naman sa Kongreso, may supermajority – ay palagay ko mangyayari iyon.”/PN
