Explaining Power Sustainability to His Children

Roel Castro emphasizes the importance of life experiences when discussing complex topics like power sustainability with his children. “Of course, they know my work. They know what I am doing here. But we don’t talk about specific things. My wife and I always relate it to life experiences, especially now that my children are growing and becoming professionals. It’s crucial to provide them with coaching and mentoring,” he explains.

Balancing Quality Time and a Busy Schedule

Despite a demanding schedule, Castro prioritizes family time, especially on weekends. “I try to be home on weekends. My eldest is in Manila preparing for graduate school and running a small business. My second child works with the French Chamber of Commerce, and my youngest is entering her third year of college in Diliman. We have different schedules, but my wife ensures we come together, whether for mass or meals. Technology helps us stay connected during the weekdays.”

Fatherhood Shaping Career and Leadership

Fatherhood profoundly influences Castro’s leadership style. On Father’s Day, he received over a hundred messages from employees, thanking him for his fatherly guidance. “I realized my role as President and CEO extends beyond business. Like parenting, I aim to create an environment of fairness and opportunity. Just as we want our children to be independent and ethical, I want the same for my employees. I give time to my children and my employees, ensuring they succeed in their careers.”

Cherished Family Traditions

Traveling once a year with his family stands out as a cherished tradition for Castro. “Traveling builds common experiences. During family dinners, we often reminisce about these trips. It’s not about the destinations or the food, but the conversations and connections we share. Finding time to talk during these trips is crucial.”

A Memorable Lesson from His Children

Reflecting on a transformative moment with his son, Castro gets emotional. “As a traditional parent, I was once very strict, even using a stick for discipline. One incident where I threw away my son’s gadget led him to write me a heartfelt letter. He asked me to talk to him instead of hitting him. That moment changed my approach to parenting. I realized that communication is key. Encouraging and motivating our children, rather than humiliating them, fosters a more productive and positive environment.”

Encouraging Work-Life Balance

Castro believes in leading by example. “You can’t put instructions in a memo on how to be a good father. Each person has unique experiences and upbringings. It’s about showing them how to balance work and family through actions, not words.”

Advice for Balancing Career and Family

For young fathers balancing career and family, Castro advises clarity in objectives. “In the early stages of your career and marriage, there are insecurities and adjustments. Always prioritize your family. Be compassionate, as family is the ultimate backstop. I made a commitment never to fail my family, and I trust in the Lord’s guidance in all that I do.”

Roel Castro’s journey as a father and a leader exemplifies the profound impact of parenting on professional life. His dedication to both his family and his employees reflects a holistic approach to leadership, rooted in compassion, fairness, and unwavering commitment to those he guides./PN
