‘Prepare for wet season’

BACOLOD City – The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office must now prepare for the rainy season, said the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).

The SP passed a resolution last week stressing that rain preparatory measures are needed in Bacolod, which is prone to flood in times of heavy downpour.

The resolution cited the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) releasing climate data covering the period April to September 2018.

PAG-ASA’s Seasonal Climate Outlook report showed that this June, the country will experience a gradual shift from northeast monsoon to southwest monsoon.

The southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfalls that result in floods during the wet season.

The northeast monsoon, on the other hand, brings cold air to the shores from the Christmas season to February.

Resolution proponent Councilor Cindy Rojas added that the Department of Interior and Local Government has issued Memorandum Circular No. 2018-73, which implements “Oplan Tag-ulan: Preparedness Measures for the Rainy Season Calendar Year 2018.”

Rojas said the measure is in line with the national vision to have “safer, adaptive and disaster-resilient Filipino communities.”

“It is the duty of every local government unit to ensure the safety of its constituents,” Rojas added./PN
