ILOILO City – Can’t get suspected drug lord Richard Prevendido? Try his sister, Barangay Captain Remia Prevendido Gregori of Bakhaw, Mandurriao district.
Gregori may be charged with dereliction of duty for the continued proliferation of shabu in her village, according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
But the right office to pursue such charge is the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), according to Atty. Gil Pabilona, PDEA regional director.
“Nasa DILG ang pag-file ng kaso. Ang sa amin, kung may makita kaming ebidensya, maaring magamit against sa kanya,” said Pabilona.
Friday last week, PDEA launched a series of antidrug operations in Barangay Bakhaw targeting the Prevendidos. Some P1.3-million worth of shabu was seized from Richard’s house and from the houses of Bonie Prevendido Gregori and Ednie Jimena. The three, however, were not in their houses.
Bonie is a son of the barangay captain while Jimena is a nephew.
Prior to the house raids, PDEA also busted two nephews of the barangay captain and Richard (Troy John Prevendido and Ariel Prevendido).
In its antidrug operations, PDEA taps barangay captains and councilmen of the areas to serve as witnesses. During Friday’s operations, however, Barangay Captain Remia Prevendido was not around.
The barangay captain could not be reached for comment as of this writing. The chances of her facing charges are not remote. Thursday last week, the Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group (RAIDSOTG) charged with obstruction of justice Barangay Captain Keith Espinosa of Monica Blumentritt, City Proper.
Espinosa is the wife of drug suspect Jesus “Jing-jing” Espinosa Jr. RAIDSOTG raided their house on Oct. 2.
In his complaint fled before the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas, RAIDSOTG chief Superintendent Ramir Gallardo claimed the barangay captain refused to sign the certification as witness in the implementation of the search warrant against her husband and the certification as witness in the inventory of seized shabu.
RAIDSOTG cops recovered seven sachets of shabu, guns and ammunitions from the Espinosa house.
Gallardo also charged Espinosa with grave misconduct, conduct unbecoming of a public official and irregularity in the performance of duty under Sections 3 (a) of Republic Act 3019 (Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act).
Also named as respondents were Barangay Monica Blumentritt councilmen Arturo Atinado and Amadeo Atinado. They, too refused to serve as witnesses, complained Gallardo./PN
