BACOLOD City – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Occidental ordered a price freeze on basic necessities, citing President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of a state of lawless violence.
In a statement, DTI-Negros Occidental said unless sooner lifted by the President, price control of basic necessities shall remain effective for the duration of the condition that brought it about, but not more than 60 days.
Automatic price control is implemented when a state of calamity, disaster, emergency or rebellion is declared pursuant to Republic Act 7581 as amended by Republic Act 10623 or the Price Act.
According to DTI, this Act provides protection to consumers by stabilizing the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities, and by prescribing measures against undue price increases during emergency situations and similar situations.
The price freeze covers basic necessities like canned sardines, processed milk, coffee, instant noodles, canned goods, bottled mineral water, laundry soaps, and detergents.
An administrative fine of not less than P1,000 nor more than P1 million shall be imposed on violators of the Price Act subject to the circumstances and after due notice and hearing.
