‘Prison bars can’t stop inmates from celebrating Hearts’ Day’

ILOILO City – Inmates at the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) Female Dormitory in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo celebrated Valentine’s Day for the first time.

“The bars cannot hinder our PDLs (persons deprived of liberty) from showing love this Valentine’s Day because love does not only happen between two persons but also between friends and family,” jail warden Inspector Imee Lopera said on Thursday.

Seven pairs took part in a singing contest dubbed as the “Sweetheart Duo,” where the PDLs unleashed their talent in singing love songs.

The PDLs gathered for a boodle fight after the singing contest.

Some of the PDLs also received Valentine’s cards, flowers and chocolates from their husbands detained at the IDJ Male Dormitory.

As much as the IDJ wanted the PDLs to spend Valentine’s Day with their family outside prison, the visiting hours were still observed, Lopera said.

The IDJ female dormitory currently has 154 inmates. (PNA/PN)
