BORACAY – At least 4,000 jobs were offered for workers who will be displaced during the six-month closure of this island resort beginning April 26.
The umbrella group One Boracay, Save Boracay organized the job fair on Monday to “help people who may lose their jobs during the closure,” said Tourism Congress of the Philippines (TCP) president Jose Clemente III.
TCP is among the organizations that banded under the group. Others were the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association International, Philippine Tourism and Hospitality Officers and Marketers Association, and the Philippine Travel Agencies Association.
Various jobs, mostly for the tourism sector, were offered by at least eight companies – including JobStreet – during the event.
These jobs are based in Iloilo, Palawan, Bohol, and other parts of the country, said Clemente.
At least 36,000 workers are expected to lose their jobs once Boracay closes.
Bernie Suyod, who works as a tour coordinator in the island, joined the job fair.
Suyod, a resident of Ibajay, Aklan, said he is willing to relocate to get a job to sustain the needs of his family in the next six months.
One Boracay, Save Boracay also initiated a fund-raising activity to help a Malay-based tourism cooperative and association.
It was also the group that conducted a cleanup activity at Bulabog Beach, gathering over 100 volunteers.
Clemente said the cleanup and the job fair are their way of showing solidarity with the government and all stakeholders in Boracay.
Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment will be holding a job fair to help more Boracay closure-affected workers. (With PNA/PN)
