ILOILO City – The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) has recommended the privatization of this city’s slaughterhouse in Barangay Tacas, Jaro district to improve its service.
NMIS recently submitted to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog the result of its evaluation on the slaughterhouse conducted early this month.
It was only in November last year when the abattoir started slaughtering hogs again. For months, it stopped doing so because its boiler got broken. Two new boilers were purchased.
Boilers are where slaughtered hogs are immersed in hot water before they are dressed.
The city government will study the recommendation, according to City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
NMIS also recommended that the city government employ competent personnel to maintain the slaughterhouse’s equipment.
The Department of Agriculture-attached agency also recommended repairs.
“We welcome these recommendations,” said Galvez.
The city government wanted the slaughterhouse to be classified as an AA or AAA meat processing facility but for years it was hobbled with poor facilities.
Some meat vendors told Panay News they resorted to backyard slaughtering after the abattoir stopped accommodating hogs.
Under Executive Order 137 series of 1993, “A” slaughterhouses are those with facilities and procedures “of minimum adequacy” such that the livestock and fowls slaughtered in them are suitable for distribution and sale only within the city or municipality where the slaughterhouse is located.
“AA” slaughterhouses are those with facilities and operational procedures “sufficiently adequate” such that the livestock and fowls slaughtered in them are suitable for sale in any market domestic or international.
The highest classification is “AAA” – those with facilities and operational procedures “appropriate” to slaughter livestock and fowls for sale in any market, domestic or international./PN
