ILOILO City – “Definitely pag naging batas ito (death penalty) it will have a chilling effect sa matitigas ang ulo.”
That was Brigadier General Rene Pamuspusan, director of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6), expressing support to the re-imposition of the death penalty proposed by President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday during his fourth State of the Nation Address.
“The President recognizes na marami nang accomplishments ang Philippine National Police (PNP) in the anti-drug campaign but the problem persists,” said Pamuspusan.
Duterte asked Congress to reinstate death penalty for heinous crimes related to illegal drugs and plunder.
“We support the President. I believe the good Senator (Ronald) Bato (Dela Rosa, former PNP chief) is for the (revival of the) death penalty (too),” said Pamuspusan.
The PRO-6 director admitted that drug trafficking remains a challenge and “marami pa rin ang dapat nating gawin.”
Data from the PRO-6 showed the local police having filed 4,459 charges against drug suspects from Dec. 5, 2017 to July 11 this year.
The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office had the most number of drug charges filed (1,676), followed by the Bacolod City Police Office (1,557) and Iloilo City Police Office (482)./PN
