ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) has assured the public of heightened security measures for the traditional Simbang Gabi masses and/or Misa de Gallo starting Monday.
Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, spokesperson for the PRO-6, said all police commanders have been instructed to enhance visibility around churches across the region.
Simbang Gabi is a cherished Filipino Catholic tradition consisting of a series of nine early morning masses (from December 16) leading up to Christmas Day.
Simbang Gabi translates to “Night Mass” in English, although the services are often held in the pre-dawn hours – typically a 4 a.m. or even earlier – to accommodate farmers and workers who needed to attend mass before starting their day (thus it is alternatively called misa de gallo).
“We will deploy maximum police presence to ensure safety not only in churches but also in other areas of convergence such as transportation hubs, malls, and tourist destinations,” Solis said.
Also, roving police units and inspection teams will monitor church premises to maintain order.
Simbang Gabi is a novena, or nine-day period of spiritual preparation, symbolizing the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and the anticipation of Christ’s birth.
Solis reminded churchgoers to remain vigilant and safeguard their personal belongings.
“Don’t assume you are safe from thieves just because you are in a church. Thieves can strike anywhere,” he warned.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities./PN
