ILOILO City – “Generally peaceful” was how the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) described the 60th Palarong Pambansa in Antique province.

Thousands of student athletes and sports officials gathered in the national multisport event that Antique hosted for the first time from April 23 to 29.

“No major incident involving the delegates and guests occurred,” said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.

Gorero lauded Task Force Palaro for managing to carry out, with the help of organizers and the locals, safety and security measures in all seven towns where sporting events were spread during the weeklong competitions.

The PRO-6 sent hundreds of officers in a bid to achieve “zero major incident.”

Cooperation among the delegates and the locals was a big factor in maintaining peace and order, Gorero stressed.

“We are really thankful that no major incidents happened [even though there were] petty incidents,” he said.

Police frisked and checked the bags of everyone going in and out of the Binirayan Sports Complex in the capital town of San Jose de Buenavista, where most of the games were held.

Some officers from outside Antique assigned for the Palaro remained in the province, what with some delegates opting to stay after the competitions.

“We cannot pull them all out as long as there are still delegates in the province,” Gorero stressed./PN
