ILOILO City – A total of 1,000 mangroves were planted by the Police Regional Office in Region 6 (PRO-6) in the province of Capiz yesterday.

PRO-6 personnel together with the Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO) and the local government unit of Ivisan joined in the mangrove planting activity in the town’s Barangay Agustin Navarra.

“We need to take care of our environment that’s why we take time to plant trees despite our busy schedule,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO-6 spokesperson.

She added that the activity was part of the Philippine National Police’s “Plant a Tree” program, as they were “strong advocates of environmental protection and preservation.”

The activity had the theme “Kalikasan ay Pangalagaan para sa Kinabukasan ng Ating Kabataan.”

Malong said mangroves protect shorelines from damage due to storm and hurricane winds, waves and floods. These also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems.

Mangrove forests serve as the breeding ground for several marine species and serves as filter for wastes./PN
