PRO-6 to probe Santa Barbara shooting

ILOILO – The Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS) of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) will conduct a motu proprio probe into the case of a mentally-challenged man who was shot dead during a police negotiation for his surrender in Barangay Bagumbayan, Santa Barbara recently.

RIAS chief, Police Colonel Roger James Brillantes, will be spearheading the investigation.

Brillantes said an investigation is automatically done if a police fires his gun and there’s death, but it does not mean that the police are already guilty.

On Monday night, the 41-year-old Joel Simpao was shot dead by Police Master Sergeant Richard Jamoyot of the Special Weapons and Tactics.

Police said Simpao tried to kill Santa Barbara police chief, Police Major Raymund Celoso.

Simpao died while being treated for a gunshot wound at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Celoso said they had no plan to kill or shoot the man./PN
