ILOILO – A proposed government and convention center is seen to significantly enhance the economic landscape of the 2nd District and the entire province.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. has identified Santa Barbara and Zarraga towns as potential sites for the P500-million project, with a primary focus on Santa Barbara. However, the possibility of constructing the facilities in Zarraga has not been dismissed.
Defensor described Zarraga as an ideal location for these developments due to its accessibility. It is conveniently located near both Dumangas Port and Iloilo Airport and is served by the Circumferential Roads.
Zarraga will also benefit from the planned Panay-Guimaras-Negros (PGN) Island Bridges project, which will further enhance its connectivity to other parts of the region.
Additionally, Zarraga will be on the route of the proposed Iloilo-Capiz-Aklan Expressway, further bolstering its appeal as a strategic development site.
“The direction of development is moving towards Zarraga, making it a prime candidate for the infrastructure we plan to build for the whole province,” said Defensor.
Last month, Defensor visited the office of Special Assistant to the President Ernesto “Anton” Floirendo Lagdameo Jr. to request funding for the project.
Both 2nd District’s Cong. Michael Gorricita and Uswag Ilonggo party-list’s Cong. James “Jojo” Ang have also committed to supporting the funding efforts for these significant infrastructural developments.
Aside from the government center, Governor Defensor is keen on establishing a convention center in Zarraga or Santa Barbara, citing the fully booked schedule of the existing center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City as a compelling reason for expansion.
Defensor suggested that additional venues, such as a sports arena and another convention center, might be considered to accommodate large events.
The construction of the convention center is envisioned to be carried out through a public-private partnership. Congressman Gorricita expressed optimism about the economic uplift these projects could bring to the 2nd District and the province at large, particularly in terms of job creation from construction through to operation.
Congressman Ang echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the projects’ importance for the province’s progress.
“These projects are not just for Zarraga but for the entire province, aimed at providing opportunities for the Ilonggos,” said Ang.
Governor Defensor also highlighted the government center’s role in housing the provincial government’s frontline offices and various national government agencies, aiming to centralize services for easier public access. He is also considering a digital system for these offices to streamline operations and improve the ease of doing business.
