ILOILO City – Business establishments that offer free internet access should be regulated, according to Councilor Plaridel Nava.
These establishments use the free internet service to lure customers.
However, according to Nava, there have been complaints of deception. Two of these complaints were the slow internet connection and no connection at all.
The councilor’s proposed measure was referred to the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on information and communication technology, trade and industry.
Nava also said free internet access may result to young people using it for the wrong reasons or illicit activities. But there’s already an ordinance addressing this – Regulation Ordinance 2011-222 authored by then councilor Nielex Tupas.
Tupas’ ordinance requires all commercial establishments offering internet services to provide an appropriate computer program, software, filters and such other implements, gadgets or measures to prevent customers from accessing pornographic websites.
The city government’s Task Force on Internet and Gaming Center Anti-Piracy and Pornography has been tasked to enforce the ordinance./PN
