MANILA – As the Philippines celebrates World Press Freedom Day, President Rodrigo Duterte said the press must be protected from all forms of threats and intimidation.

In his message, Duterte noted the vital role of the press in this digital age, saying that a “free and responsible press” is essential in the advancement of society.

“The nature of news and information as a public good must be utilized effectively to achieve their intended benefits,” Duterte said in a video message posted on Presidential Task Force on Media Security’s Facebook page.

“The messenger itself, the press, must be protected from all forms of threat and intimidation so that they may fully serve the best interest of our people,” he added.

Duterte assured that his administration will remain committed to promoting press freedom.

He also urged the public to ensure the integrity and safety of the press.

“Cognizant of the ever-changing communication system these days, may the mass media also uphold fairness and transparency while also making a positive impact on the people’s lives,” the President said.

In his previous speech, the President said journalists who took bribes or engaged in other corrupt activities deserve to die while stressing that corrupt media scribes were legitimate targets of assassination.

Since Duterte assumed the presidency in 2016, a total of 19 journalists were killed according to the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility./PN
