ILOILO City – The Provinceof Iloilo hosted the Provincial Solid Waste Management Summit which aimed to spread awareness about the need for efficient solid waste management, along with various methods that could be implemented.

One method was recycling, and the provincial capitol had set aside a special area on the ground floor to showcase several examples of commercially viable recycled products. Some of the featured items included hats, bags, ornaments, toys and pillow cases made from plastic and old newspapers.
Exhibit facilitator Arturo Cangrejo said these products were produced by various municipalities throughout the region, and were promoted as souvenirs.

“Basically, ang idea naton dira, ang ini na mga basura, indi lang dapat pag-ihaboy. So liwat-liwat naton ni usaron ining mga produkto,” Cangrejo said.

When asked how long recycling products and businesses have been around in Iloilo, Cangrejo replied that it has been going on for some time now.

“We have been doing this for several years,” he said. “Mga duha na ka-tuig. Amat-amat nila gina-develop ang mga produkto nila.”

One such community is Barangay Salacay in Cabatuan. Village chief Jusita M. Landa reported that the recycled products her community produced offered a little extra income to participating members.

“Damo ang amon na-income,” Landa said. “Ang mga tourist na naga-kadto da, kita nila ang amon nga produkto da.”

When asked about the profitability of the recycled products for the entire community, Landa said “Siguro makalab-ot kami P20,000. Dala na na profits.”

Cangrejo also echoed Landa’s own assessments, believing that there’s a “market” for recycled products here in Iloilo.

“I think we have a market for that. May functionality nga gina-tawag,” he said with regards to the products, and added that their profitability can potentially lead to new recycling ventures in the near future./PN
