THERE’S a new teleserye in town and already it is garnering so many ratings. It has everything: plot twists, drama, a femme fatale at war with a strong domineering male lead, whistleblowers and conspiracies, and action that will keep you on the edge of your seat. No, don’t expect Gong Yoo or Coco Martin to star. This is the Duterte-de Lima soap opera.

You don’t have to wait until after the 6 p.m. news to get your fair share of drama. It’s in the news itself. It seems like everyday all your hear is a story of the President haranguing this, the senator orating that. It builds up the tension in the fine line that prevents both sides from strangling each other. Almost everyday these two people are on the front page. They may even give JaDine and LizQuen a run for their money with the way they are trending.

With the hype given to these two, nobody seems to really give a care about the minor characters. The farmers struggling to grow their crops and earn more than enough to breakeven, the overseas Filipino workers facing abuse by their employers to supply for their families, those who lost family members to the drug war and the revolutionary war, those trials that could either expose revelations or farces, those parents who lost children due to substandard buses, or those who are trying to keep the country secure with the onslaught of extremist groups and rickety national relations.

It’s sad how we forget the stories of these little people just because the drama happening between the two big mouths seems more interesting. But these unsung heroes who sacrifice everyday for their families and their country, do we ever hear their stories? Do we ever hear what they have to say about issues? All we hear are curses and the cries of the two “main” characters.

But who cares right? I mean it’s the leading man and woman we care about, the ratings they get. Who cares about little voices next to those big booming ones that ring throughout the media?

And now our femme fatale is thrown in prison by the oppressor, what will she do next? Stay tuned for the next episode.

Meanwhile a girl gets raped and murdered, soldiers in Mindanao die, a domestic helper in Kuwait is beaten up, a family struggles to raise enough money for their child’s funeral after the killer fieldtrip, but who cares right? It’s the Duterte-Delima soap opera anyways./PN
