Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
EVERYBODY knows the lyrics of the famous song that gets belted out every New Year, but have you ever wondered what Auld Lang Syne means?
From my research, I have found that Auld Lang Syne is a word of Scottish origin (which would explain the nosebleed-inducing spelling) that means âtimes long past.â I guess this is the reason that this is the theme song every new year. Aside from making new yearâs resolutions, the one thing everyone does during New Year is look back at the year that just ended.
Itâs quite ironic actually if you think about it. Shouldnât we be greeting the new year thinking about what we can start doing?
However, if you look at all the TV specials and features that come out, they are all about rewinds and looking back. Looking back on the most notable events, achievements, deaths, calamities, and trends.
Looking back at these moments gives you a sense of melancholy since you know 2016 is never going to happen again. Thatâs why I think looking back is a very important part of the new year.
Itâs same way history is an important subject to learn in school. Even though everyday we move forward, we need to also look back every now and then to keep us on the right track.
We must never forget the events that happened last year no matter how small. Even the trumpet challenge, the mannequin challenge, tatlong bibe, these seemed insignificant during their time but years from now, our grandchildren will look upon those the way we look upon the macarena and the twist. The clown apocalypse will be a horror story we can tell our kids and grandkids.
Though several think 2016 was a bad and boring year, by 2030, we will appreciate the little details of 2016 and feel nostalgic everytime we think about it. It will be just same way people think of the 80s and 90s now.
Looking back helps us move forward and helps every generation grown with every year that passes. So, donât forget the times long past; embrace them and always keep them in your heart./PN
