THE CURRENT selection of songs that I have is the result of several years of exploration, downloading, deleting, and bills.

I think the kind of music that we appeal to is an extension of who we are. The lyrics and melody of the songs in your playlist are actually how your soul is expressing itself. It doesn’t matter what the genre is; pop, rock, indie, classical, hip hop, R&B, K-pop, the list is never ending, especially with all the new genres that are developing like dream pop, baroque pop, and electronica.

I think the new kinds of music that are developing are a result of the diverse human experiences we are having, especially with the dawn of the modern times. People are learning to express themselves in ways that are unique. We get inspiration from other older types of music and end up creating new and unique sounds that appeal to different people.

Previously, mainstream music was what everyone loved and listened to. Now, there are thousands of different bands all over the world with their own unique sounds. I think these new sounds are a result of more freedom of expression. We were controlled before by the stigmas and norms of society but now that people are more open- minded we can make music about topics that would have been deemed controversial before like drugs, sex, religion, murder and homosexuality.

Music also tells a lot about who you are. Whether you are introverted, extroverted or ambiverted there will always be types of music that appeal to you.

Music taste even changes depending on our age. When I was still in elementary school, I noticed that the songs that appealed to me were songs that everyone was listening to. When I was in high school I started exploring more and got attracted to rock and indie. Research shows that our teen years are the time when we search for independence and identity, thus the result of me listening to the queerest sounding bands from all over the world.

Now, I treasure my playlist. It has been with me through my good and bad times.

Music is the friend that will always be with you and have the right things to say to comfort you. I truly believe that you can tell a lot about a person by listening to their playlist and life without music would be a life not worth living. (angelica.panaynews@gmail.com/PN)
