SAN JOSE, Antique – To prevent forest fires especially these summer months, community vigilance is a must, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Joining the campaign of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on fire prevention, Information Officer Joery Ocson of DENR’s Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Belison, Antique said they were stepping up the construction of fire lines in reforestation sites.

“We count much on the support of barangay officials and residents in upland communities to help protect forests,” said Ocson.

Ocson gave the following tips to prevent forest fires:

* Upland dwellers must not throw cigarette butts or any flammable objects in the grassland. These could ignite fire that could burn a plantation and damage the habitat of animals and plants.

* Torches used at night when thrown into the wild could also start a fire. Better if it is put out in a safe area away from withered leaves and grasses.

* Farmers must not burn their forest lands for pasture of livestock or kaingin farming. This hurts the environment, especially the natural regeneration of plants.

Under Project LAWIN (Landscape Wildlife Indicators) and Biodiversity Protection System, DENR is intensifying its forest patrolling system to monitor movement of wildlife and other activities in Antique’s biodiversity areas, Ocson also said.

Information drives are also conducted in barangays to increase the people’s awareness on their role to conserve and protect the environment. (PIA-Antique/PN)
