SAN JOSE, Antique – During the meeting of agencies engaged in peace and order and public safety, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Antique assistant district director Aldrin Mercader urged the public to be wary of online scams sent through email and social media.
Many have been victimized, he said, due to everyone’s easy access to the internet.
Most of the victims were senior citizens, separated or widowed seniors, said Mercader.
They were promised valuable packages, huge amounts of money or investments in the country but the main motive really is to get the money from them.
NBI reported having received complaints of scams in Antique. Some already made down payments for dubious transactions before they reported.
Mercader encouraged people to report to the NBI suspicious dealings early on.
On the part of the Philippine National Police, San Jose municipal police station chief and lawyer Benjo Clarite reiterated his reminder to the public not to trust their personal information to friends on social media or to those sending messages via cell phone, or “textmates.”
Clarite also assured the public that police presence is being intensified in public places and vital installations like banks and remittance centers. (PIA-Antique/PN)
