ILOILO City – Young Ilonggo students are encouraged to take up agriculture courses to spur development in agriculture.
Iloilo Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Elias Sandig, Jr. said the younger generation should consider taking up Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and related courses to boost the country’s agriculture sector and ensure food sufficiency amid the uncertainties in the global supply.
“Kuha kamo kurso sa pagpanguma kag makabulig kamo sa inyo mga ginikanan (Take agriculture course so you can help your parents),” he said.
Sandig said there is a need to address the problems of the aging population of farmers and the dwindling number of agricultural extension workers.
More youth engaging in agriculture can help materialize the twin-goal of the Department of Agriculture, which is “Masaganang Ani, Mataas na Kita.”
He added that the establishment of the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project, that can contribute more than 30,000 hectares of irrigated rice areas in Iloilo, can open more opportunities for fresh agriculture graduates. (PIA-6 Iloilo)
