KALIBO, Aklan – Vendors at the public market here were urged to put price tags on all the goods they sell.

Consumers have the right to choose the best products at reasonable prices, according to Municipal Economic Enterprise Development Office (MEEDO) head Mary Gay Quimpo Joel.

She reminded MEEDO market collectors and inspectors to check the vendors’ compliance.

Article 81 of the Republic Act No. 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines requires appropriate tags, labels, or markings that indicate the prices of consumer products sold in retail. With these, products must not be sold at higher prices than stated.

Also, Section 5 of Republic Act No. 7581 or the Price Act stipulates that selling a basic necessity or prime commodity without a price tag is prima facie evidence of profiteering.

“The requirement of price tags in our public market is necessary. Let us obey. Display the prices of the commodities,” said Joel.

Price tags, labels or markings must be written clearly, indicating the price of the commodity in pesos and centavos. Erasures or alterations of any sort of price tags, labels or markings are not allowed.

Vendors on weekend markets (bolante) selling vegetables and fresh fruits to kitchenware along Toting Reyes Street are also reminded to disclose the prices of the items being sold./PN
