Quarantine drives WV crimes down by 72.5%

ILOILO City – From April 5 to April 11, police units across Western Visayas recorded 22 crimes – a 72.5 percent drop from the 80 crimes recorded in the same period last year.

The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) attributed the drop to the ongoing enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) which aims to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“Walang taong lumalabas. Kung walang tao sa daan, wala na ring krimen,” said Police Brigadier Rene Pamuspusan, regional police director.

He also commented policemen for their non-stop conduct of checkpoints and foot patrol.

According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO-6 information officer, only four murder cases were recorded from April 5 to 11, two cases – or 33.33 percent – lower than the six murder cases recorded in the same period last year.

Cases of physical injury also dropped – by 69.23 percent. Eight cases were reported, way below last year’s 26 cases recorded in the same period.

Cases rape declined by 91.66 percent; 12 were reported from April 5-11 last year and only one was reported in the same period this year.

Malong also said no robbery and car hijacking cases were reported since last month.

On the other hand, the police recorded three homicide cases this year between April 5 and 11,  up from one case last year in the same period.

Pamuspusan warned those who continue to ignore the quarantine curfew imposed by various local government units.

“I encouraged the cooperation of the public. Report any untoward incident to the nearest police station,” he said./PN
