MANILA – Quezon Tangerines outlasted Biñan Tatak Gel 1-Pacman Partylist Volley Angels with a 25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-15 Game 2 win to claim the MPVA 2024 Season crown at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
Mary Grace Borromeo stepped up with 18 points, on 16 attacks and two service aces, to be named Player of the Game as the Tangerines concluded the best-of-three title series at 2-0.
According to Borromeo, the Tangerines overcame a tough challenge from the Volley Angels in the first three sets before pounding off their opponent in the fourth frame to claim their first-ever MPVA title.
“Nandun ‘yung kapit namin (especially in the fourth set), ‘yung tiwala namin sa isa’t isa na alam naming lalaban kami kasi gusto na naming kunin itong championship na ito,” Borromeo said in a post-game interview.
“Sobrang nakakapagod itong tournament na ito but madami rin kaming natutunan na magagamit namin sa next seasons namin,” added the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers standout.
The Jerry Yee-mentored Tangerines also won Game 1 of the title series, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 17-15, behind the all-around effort of Mycah Go.
Tangerines’ Rhea Mae Densing headlined the individual awardees as she bagged the Most Valuable Player and Best Opposite Hitter, while Chenae Basarte and Cristy Ondangan were named Best Setter and 1st Best Middle Blocker, respectively.
Negrense Erika Jin Deloria, Zenneth Perolino, and Mary Ann Nuique of the Volley Angels claimed the 1st Best Outside Hitter, 2nd Best Middle Blocker, and Best Homegrown Player, respectively.
Jonah Dolorito and Angelica Blue Guzman of bronze medalist Rizal St. Gerrard Charity Foundation bagged the 2nd Best Outside Hitter and Best Libero citations, respectively./PN
