ILOILO City – The newly-painted bike lane along General Luna Street earned praises from netizens on Wednesday. But the next day after a heavy downpour, the paint started dissolving to the dismay of the public.

Some even likened it to an “icing on cake” that melted away.

Engineer Salvador Pedregosa, head of the City Engineer’s Office, explained the latex paint they used was not suitable to an asphalt surface.

He said the road-marking painting of the bike lane from General Luna Street to the public plaza of Molo district was part of their three-day trial to check what kind of paint is suitable.

Pedregosa said they halted painting the bike lane after noticing that the latex paint did not went well on asphalt surface.

The City Engineer’s Office is set to meet with the paint donor, Boysen, if they could replace the paints with the one compatible with asphalt surface.

There were around 100 gallons of paints donated by the paint company to the city for the road marking of bike lanes.

The city government has been designating bike lanes in the downtown area to encourage biking as the main mode of transportation for Ilonggos./PN
