ILOILO City – Light to moderate rain is expected in Panay Island this weekend as tropical storm “Nina” enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to an official of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
“Nina” is forecast to enter the PAR early Friday morning, Dec. 23 or even earlier and will make a landfall in Samar or Bicol region, according to Pagasa-Iloilo officer-in-charge Ronaldo Naragdao.
“Expect moderate to heavy rains sa areas nga sentro sang bagyo pero diri sa Panay mga light to moderate rain lang,” said Naragdao.
The northern part of Panay – Capiz and Aklan province – and the northern part of Iloilo province are likely to be affected, added Naragdao.
“Nina” is the 14th tropical cyclone to enter the PAR this 2016. It has the possibility of turning into a typhoon.
It is forecast to leave the PAR evening of Monday, Dec. 26 or early morning of Tuesday, Dec. 27.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 6 warned the public to be vigilant.
“It is unfortunate that we have this weather disturbance during Christmas, however, wala kita mahimo,” said Regional Director Rosario Cabrera.
In Manila, Pagasa administrator Vicente Malano recalled that seven tropical cyclones hit the Philippines between Dec. 21 and 31 from 1948 to 2015.
“Out of seven, six made landfall, and at this time of the year, [it usually hits] Visayas or central Philippines, including the southern part of Luzon,” said Malano.
OCD, along with Pagasa, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Coast Guard – Iloilo, Philippine Army and various local disaster risk reduction management councils in Region 6 had a pre-disaster risk assessment activity on Dec. 22.
“We talked about the preparations of various agencies,” said Cabrera.
DSWD has standby food packs for displaced families.
“We advise the public to stay updated with weather developments and take necessary action to be safe,” said Cabrera./PN
